Meet The Academy
Sam Fraipont
Can you briefly introduce yourself, Sam?
I am a 16-year-old centre back (born in 2009) and currently play for the U18 team. I started playing football at the age of six at RFC De Goé, and a year later I moved to Verviers to play for the local CS Jeunesse Verviétoise. The following season, at the age of 8, I joined Les Rouches, with whom I became U14 champion. I am Belgian and have already played for the U18 national team this season.
Who or what inspired you to start playing football?
I didn’t really have a specific inspiration. But I do remember that I was always playing football. Both with my father, who also played football, and with my brother, with whom I played every day of the year. And whenever I have a free moment, we still do.
What is your strongest point? And what aspect would you like to improve?
It’s difficult to talk about yourself, but I think I read the game well. At least, that’s what my coaches have said during evaluations over the past few years. I’m mainly focusing on increasing my strength in duels, coming out stronger in one-on-one situations and being a bit tougher.
What aspect lays the foundation for a professional career?
The most important aspect is the mentality, because at some point you will inevitably be confronted with some difficult moments or periods, and then how you deal with them becomes important. Of course, talent, work ethic and team spirit are extremely important, but that mental aspect can make or break your career.
Where do your sporting ambitions lie?
My ultimate dream would be to win the World Cup with Belgium and make my country proud.
What is your fondest memory with Standard?
I have so many wonderful memories with Standard so far. Winning the U14 title in Antwerp was simply amazing. I probably don’t need to tell you that the trip back and the party afterwards were more than worth it. I also loved participating in the Al Abtal Cup, with trips to cities such as Milan, Zagreb and Salou. The victory against FC Porto was also immense, and I played one of my better matches there. I also remember the two matches with the national U18 team and the trip to Sweden.
Who is your favourite player at Standard?
I’ve always had a soft spot for Zinho Vanheusden. That’s partly because I think we have a similar playing style. In fact, my teammates and coaches often call me Zinho.

Who is your favourite player or club abroad?
I am a big fan of Lionel Messi, so also a fan of FC Barcelona.
