Meet The Academy
Yanis Malamba
Could you briefly introduce yourself?
My name is Yanis Malamba, and I was born in February 2009. From the age of 5 to 7, I played for Royal Daring Club de Cointe, then at the age of 7 I joined Standard. In May, it will be ten years since I became a Rouche. Although I started out as a striker, I’ve been playing as a full-back for the last few years, and I can play on either the left or the right. I currently play for the club’s U18 team and have been part of the Belgian youth national team since the U15s.
What inspired you to start playing football? What is your earliest memory?
The person who inspired me the most is my father. He was a footballer himself and used to take me to his matches every Sunday. I was barely two years old and spent my time running around with my ball.
What is your strongest point in the game and what aspect of your game would you like to improve?
I think my speed, my explosiveness and my passing are my greatest qualities. I also think I have good vision. Nevertheless, I still have plenty of areas to improve. Given my background as a striker, I’ve spent a lot of time working on my defensive play, but my coaches assure me they’re very pleased with my progress.
What is the most important factor for a successful professional career?
There are several aspects that are particularly important for building a career. I’m thinking in particular of the importance of always performing at a consistent level, having the right mindset, playing as part of a team and, above all, demonstrating discipline and a good work ethic.
What is your sporting ambition?
I don’t really have a dream, but I see it more as achieving goals, one of which is to become a professional footballer.
What is your fondest memory at Standard?
Let me go back a few years. One of my fondest memories is of the European tournament in Schaerbeek, where we played the final against the English club Everton FC. My first trophy for best player in a U9 tournament is also a fond memory.
Who is your favourite player at Standard (current or former)?
In the current squad, I’d say Henry Lawrence, who plays in the same position as me.

Who are your favourite player and club abroad?
I like FC Barcelona’s footballing philosophy, and my favourite player is Kingsley Coman.
